About Van Hise Elementary
Van Hise Elementary is a quiet K-5 neighborhood school in the University Hill Farms area on the near west side of Madison. The campus is shared with Velma Hamilton Middle School.
Our Breakfast Program and Playground Supervision begins each day at 8:15 a.m. The first bell rings at 8:25 a.m. Students on the playground line up to enter the building. Parents driving their children to school are to drop off students on Waukesha Street in the designated drop off area. It is recommended that parents arrive prior to 8:25 to drop off students and park a block or two away and walk their student(s) to the playground. This alleviates traffic congestion, promotes school safety, and allow you and your student(s) to have additional bonding time before the school day begins.
The school day starts at 8:30 a.m. On Mondays, dismissal is at 1:45 p.m. and Tuesdays - Friday dismissal is at 3:17 p.m. All students eat lunch and have a 20 minute recess. Students in Kindergarten and first grade begin lunch recess at 11:55, eat lunch at 12:15, and return to their classrooms at 12:35. Students in grades 2 - 5 eat lunch at 1:55, go to recess at 12:15, and return to their classrooms at 12:35.
